I’m much more interested in things like layout of components, selection of features, ease of installation and setup, and especially stability.
The graph below shows how the testing went. The layout of the board is acceptable, but as with most Socket-A motherboards, the placement of components near the catches for the heat sink clips makes attachment of the heat sink a risky endeavor. Overclockers want an easy and quick method of clearing the CMOS, if necessary, and don’t want to hunt around for a bent piece of metal I used tweezers.
The reason it is so bad, is that there is no jumper! Except for the potential risk when clamping the heat sink clips, installation was easy. Getting Athlons and Durons to run stably at MHz is about as good as you can expect. The A7V is a full-sized ATX motherboard, so make sure the case you are using will take a full-size board. After a bit of toying around with ways to lessen their involvement with the production of the K7M, ASUS eventually rose to the point where they came out and fully supported the motherboard.

However, fast shutdown times on new systems can actually be a problem. ASUS has always been one of the most solid and well-respected motherboard manufacturers in the industry. It also sports an AGP-Pro slot. We haven’t seen an immediate need for including thermal compound in this location and it doesn’t affect stability as far as we know, so we didn’t count against ASUS for not including it.
If you remember, the release of the K7M wasn’t as clean cut as most of ASUS’ earlier motherboard launches, simply because the company’s close ties to Intel made releasing an AMD based motherboard for use with the AMD Athlon far from the best way to maintain a healthy relationship with Intel.
But on the A7V, when I moved the jumper from it’s normal position at 3. On first bootup, I was very surprised by the length of time required for the system to boot.

There is plenty of room to the left and right of the a77v, but the catches for the heat sink are above and below asks socket, where components get in the way. While it is difficult to say exactly why ASUS chose to mount these components vertically, there are a number of possibilities that could hold true. Having components in the way makes getting to the clips difficult. An instant winner in our eyes, the CUSL2 took the same chipset that every other motherboard manufacturer was equipped with, and managed to produce a motherboard that was more impressive than any other design based on that chipset.
